Photographing in hospitals has always been a daunting task. There is little or absolutely no opportunity to check out the hospital before the photoshoot. Hence, the photographer is required to prepare for any and every situation. Keeping these in mind photography in hospitals can be carried out with ease. Let us take a look at some of the do’s and don’t’s while photographing a newborn in a hospital.

Make the bassinet your best friend- The hospital bassinet will have to be made the best friend because it should be moved anywhere and everywhere in order to get a great shot. The bassinet should be moved according to the convenience of the photographer where he or she can position the newborn in ideal light.

Window light only- Naturally is the best for the newborns. What is more recommended is using window light as against the harsh lighting of the hospital. In case there is a need to turn on the lights then it should be definitely done to capture a breathtaking image. It advisable to place the newborn in front of the window for backlighting because it provides not only a beautiful but also a bright perspective on the moment.

Right gear- Hospital photography is much easier when the image is thought through the gear that the photographer brings. Shots differ from low to high light. One with low aperture capabilities captures the detail of the newborn whereas when space is limited then wide angle lenses work the best.

Raising the ISO- cameras these days are fancy for a reason. In case of more light, it is advisable to raise the ISO in order to bring about ore light to the sensor of the camera. Worry less about the noise and grains and focus on the capture. Noise can be reduced in Lightroom.

Using lower apertures- when lower apertures are used like f/2.8 or even something lower then it is most likely to bring more light into the camera. It is necessary to set the aperture correctly in order to maintain focus. First experiment by lowering it in order to bring forth more light while photographing in hospitals.

Natural light no flash- It is not necessary to shoot only during the daytime because various moments come and go irrespective of good light or not. The rooms of the hospital are most likely to be brighter depending on the location of the room. In case the room is brightest during a certain time of the day then don’t leave the opportunity to photograph it. It is always advisable to shoot throughout the day but save the best ones when the light is the brightest.
